Chennai: The multiple terror attacks in Mumbai have affected many in many ways. A young girl from Chennai, Nirmala Shankar, narrates her story of terror. She is one of those who witnessed the attacks at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) station.

Nirmala was lucky enough to escape from the CST station but it was only after she reached Chennai that she realised that a piece of shrapnel was still in her head.

She was all set to board the train to Chennai when terror broke loose at the CST station in Mumbai. Nirmala fell on the ground after a bullet brushed past her head. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she received stitches for an open wound.

“I wasn’t sure whether something was there in my head or not. I just knew I had been hit and I was bleeding,” says Nirmala.

But Nirmala could not wait to recover as her wedding was to take place on the November 30 and so she caught the flight to Chennai. But a persistent pain continued to worry her. Later a scan showed that a metal piece was lodged in her head.

“She asked me what to do. I told her we will get married. She was in a lot of pain and I was scared too. I kept praying that nothing should happen,” says Nirmala’s husband K Shankar Narayan.

It was only after her wedding that Nirmala went in for surgery to remove the object.

"It was a small metallic object which was about two cms deep from the surface of the brain. It was spherical in shape,” says Neuro Surgeon Apollo Hospitals, Chennai Dr L Murugan.

Nirmala is now recovering from the surgery and her family says every moment is a realisation of how close she was to getting killed.
