Mumbai top cop stung by a wild goose chase

Karn Kowshik, CNN-IBN

Mumbai: This is as bizarre as it gets. Were three suspected terrorists on a recce of the financial capital, or were they wanted for a petrol pump robbery?

"What I can say about him is that he is not the legitimate son of a father. Today he has given these pictures for a chai or one drink,” said Jt CP, Law and Order, K L Prasad.

This is an unusual soundbite from a top cop. But one can hardly blame Jt CP KL Prasad for blowing his top in this press conference hastily called after the presence of three possible terror suspects in Mumbai was leaked to the media along with their sketches forcing Mumbai Police to share some details reportedly gleaned from a vigilant cabbie.

But hours later, Prasad's cup of woes overflowed because it seems the same three men branded as possible terrorists scooping out targets across Mumbai could actually be suspects in a case of a dacoity in a petrol pump committed a few days earlier. And the same sketches had been released earlier by a suburban police station. Caught on the wrong foot for the second time in a day, Prasad's response was blistering, calling the police inspector a fool.

So is it just a case of an administrative mix up? Mistaken Identity? Or is it a symptom of conflict between different departments of the Mumbai Police?

Whatever be the reason, the incident has surely put a dent in the reputation of Mumbai's finest and promises trouble for the two officers caught in K L Prasad's broadside.
