Mumbai top cop transferred over 26/11 failure

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor has been transferred as Director General Maharashtra Police Housing Corporation Ltd, state Home Minister Jayant Patil announced in the Maharashtra Assembly on Saturday.

Gafoor has been transferred after he shunted out the Ram Pradhan Committee report, which indicted him over his failure to perform his duty during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.

The Committee report on 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks had indicted Gafoor for failing as a leader of the police force during the anti-terror operations.

Joint Commissioner K L Prasad has been given additional charge as Mumbai Police Commissioner for the time being.

The report alleges that Gafoor failed to take charge of the situation, strategise and take decisions. He did not follow the standard operating procedures of Mumbai Police for such situations as 26/11.

He did not visit each site and set up field headquarters as was required. Also, he stayed put outside Hotel Trident-Oberoi for all three days of the attack.

Gafoor also did not visit police commissionariate for updates on the situation and did not take regular meetings with field officers to take decisions or build strategies.

In short, there was a huge communication gap between Ghafoor and his officers.

The Ram Pradhan Committee report on the probe and the Action Taken Report are due to be presented in the assembly soon.
