Mumbai: In a bid to deal with speedsters on Mumbai’s accident-prone Eastern Express highway, the traffic police there have turned to dummies of themselves for help — an idea borrowed from the Canadian Police.
Under Mumbai traffic police’s new scheme, life-size cutouts of Inspector Gavas will be installed on the highway to fool speedsters into slowing down.
"The moment a driver sees the traffic police he checks his speedometer," DCP Traffic Harish Baijal explained.
But Mumbai citizens don't seem impressed with the new scheme. On the first day of the experiment, most drivers on the Eastern Express highway completely ignored the cutouts and noticed them only when CNN-IBN pointed it out to them.
While some said they can easily tell that they are cutouts, others pointed out that the dummies would be barely visible during night, and hence ineffective.
With motorists not slowing down, this has become another gimmick of the traffic police. Maybe the traffic police should reconsider and put up cutouts of film stars so that people might at least stop to gaze.
