Mumbai underworld shoots back
Mumbai: A shootout in broad daylight – Mumbai police were certainly caught unawares when two people were killed in front of their eyes- right outside the sessions court on Monday.
They have now asked the crime branch to investigate the incident with worries that Mumbai's murky underworld is making a deadly comeback above ground.
Policemen picking up vital information from the crime scene where two men accused in a narcotics case were shot in broad daylight on Monday afternoon in South Mumbai.
A day later while the police are still trying to understand the exact motive, what is most clear is that this deadly attack had been well planned.
Law and Order Joint Commissioner Arup Patnaik says, “It is the handiwork of professionals who knew exactly what they were doing."
The fact that both the men had once allegedly worked for the underworld and were accused in a drug trafficking case has given rise to two theories.
The first that the men could possibly have been targeted by a rival gang in a clear case of gang rivalry or the second that they were allegedly killed by the Rajan gang because they had become informers and had tipped off the police on several occasions in the last 6 years.
The actual task of killing the men may well have been outsourced to a smaller gang.
A broad daylight shootout in a high security area has left the Mumbai police re-thinking on its strategy on the underworld now they have the daunting task of identifying small gangs which might have cropped up in the last couple of years and are now trying to assert themselves.
