Mumbai: Students of Mumbai University have found their voice on the airwaves, and to be precise on 107.8.
Friendly banter from R J Pankaj is what you get when you tune in to this community radio station launched by President Pratibha Patil, an alumnus of the Mumbai University.
It's a small beginning with an agenda that goes beyond education and entertainment.
According to community radio enthusiasts, this genre of radio gained momentum in India over the last decade or so with nearly twenty stations on air. A handful of them run are by college students.
Apart from communicating vital university information, these stations telecast an assortment of programmes on a variety of subjects ranging from religion to popular science to social issues.
“Emphasis is on creating understanding of community issues and highlighting social initiatives,” Member Secretary, FM Community Radio, University of Mumbai, Neeraj Hatekar says.
“Basic vital info like traffic rules, election rules, etc is also a part of our radio station. We are planning to web stream content so other people can access it from anywhere,” Radio Consultant Pankaj Athawale adds.
So if you're a radio junkie and happen to be within six kilometres of the Kalina campus of the Mumbai University, you can tune in to the evolving face of community radio in the city.
