Mumbai: Mumbai is the home to many rich, educated people and is the financial capital of India. But it also has a record of poor voter turnout during elections.
After a poor show in the Lok Sabha elections the question now is will Mumbaikars change their attitude in the Assembly elections?
The night before elections in Mumbai with a holiday on Tuesday, Mumbaikars were out and about in the city that never sleeps. But how many of the Mumbaikars will get up on Tuesday morning and go and cast their vote?
The 26/11 terror attacks had seen angry Mumbaikars come on the street in protest. Yet, when it came to the 2009 Lok Sabha elections there was a very low voter turnout.
In South Mumbai the voter turnout was 43 per cent while both North Central and South Central Mumbai saw a turnout of 42 per cent. In North Mumbai the turnout was around 46 per cent
So, will the Vidhan Sabha elections be any different?
The Assembly elections will decide who will form the next government in Maharashtra. But much depends on whether Mumbaikars can shake off their apathy, stop complaining and speak through their votes about their future leadership.
