Woman's body found in bag at Mumbai station

Mumbai: A young woman's body, bundled in a bag, was found at the busy Churchgate railway station in south Mumbai on Monday, railway police said.

The woman, aged between 20 to 25 years, was suspected to have been strangulated, police said, adding that the body did not appear to be decomposed pointing to the fact that the woman might have been killed just a few hours earlier.

According to the Government Railway Police, a bag consisting clothes was found abandoned on platform number 3 of Churchgate station at 6.30 this morning. It was suspected to have been dumped from luggage compartment of one of the three suburban trains which had arrived then.

The woman, aged between 20 to 25 years, was suspected to have been strangulated, police said.

As it lay abandoned, police were informed at around 7.30 am who opened it to find the body.

As there were bruises on her neck and back, police suspect she was strangulated.

The body has been taken to GT Hospital where medical tests are being conducted to find out if she was sexually assaulted.

Six police teams have been formed to probe the case, and police are sifting through the CCTV footages between Virar and Churchgate stations.

On March 15, the body of a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Rehmat Khan, was found in a suitcase abandoned at Sandhurst Road railway station of Central Railway. Police later arrested her husband and two brothers-in-law in connection with the case.
