Mumbai: A few lakh people visited the Mumbai beaches till late on Sunday night for the grand Ganesh festivities. But the morning after, it wasn’t a pretty sight.
So, to help Mumbai look clean almost 1,000 Mumbaikars gathered at the Juhu beach early on Monday morning to make a difference.
Leading the pack was Member of Parliament Priya Dutt who got her hands dirty for two straight hours. Last year, after the Ganesh immersions, around 60 trucks of debris were taken from Juhu beach alone to be taken to the Malad dumping ground for disposal.
“Last year, there was a lot more plastic but this year there were a lot more Ganesh idols,” Dutt said.
More than 1.5 lakh household Ganpatis and over 10,000 large sarvajanik Ganesh idols made it to the sea last year. This time around those figures, once they're compiled, are expected to be higher.
But irrespective of the numbers, Dutt along with 500 students from eight schools in her constituency came together to enthusiastically cleanup the beaches.
At other beaches, too, similar citizen cleanup operations were on. And with so many people joining in for the cleanup, the Juhu beach was cleared in less than three hours.
This project is definitely one for the Mumbai album.
