Mumbai: Seven near-simultaneous blasts rocked Mumbai on Tuesday evening killing at least 174 and injuring hundreds of others.

India’s commercial capital was put on high alert and all local trains – also called the lifelines of the city – were immediately suspended.

So where did most Mumbaikars stranded at stations spend their night?

When the city came to a near-standstill, those stranded did not spend their night at different stations, but managed to find shelter in the homes and hearts of their fellow citizens.

Students at the International Students Hostel in the Churchgate area gave shelter to many stranded commuters, including the family of one-and-a-half-year old Megha.

Her parents are glad that they have found a roof and some food for the night, all thanks to the efforts of some young students.

"These students have provided us with shelter and food and milk for my little daughter. I dont know what I would have done without their help," Megha’s father Purnachandra Tripathi said.

"We have been here since seven in the evening, and thanks to these students we have food and shelter for the night," another passenger, Girish Dave, said.

ith some young students voluntarily helping, this hostel and some others have opened their doors and their kitchens to travelers stranded in the city, with some basic medical facilities thrown in. All doled out free of charge with a ready smile.

"We decided that we would help all passenegers since we have the hostel and provide them with shelter,” a student Shikhil Suri said.

"Its my duty to serve people food at a time like this and help people," another student Madhu Shetty said.

After the devastation, the ever-resilient Mumbaikars lived up to their famed spirit, helping out those in need.
