Mumbai: The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has given its approval for a hike in power rates in Mumbai.
MERC has given the green signal to the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport or BEST to hike rates in the range of 27 to 56 per cent.
Mumbai is buying costlier power to bridge a shortfall.
Those using more than 300 units of electricity in a month will be hit hard.
The new rates will be effective from the April 1.
MERC chief Pramod Deo said the commission has allowed "open access" to consumers from April 1, under which anyone with a requirement of as low as one MW could choose his supplier if there is one.
Referring to the current power scenario in the state, Deo said the way out could be to follow the Pune model where there is no load-shedding at present as excess power produced by local private sector units is being sold to the grid.
Also MERC will on April 12 hear a plea filed by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co against Tata Power for overdrawing 200 MW of power from the state grid.
