Mumbai: After having made their way into the course books of management schools, the humble tiffin carriers of India’s financial hub are about to turn a new leaf – all while delivering piping hot food to Mumbaikars.
Besides feeding Mumbaikars and lecturing on business fundas, the dabbawalas will now start marketing products for corporate companies.
Nearly 5,000 dabbawalas will spread information about company products and schemes to around two lakh consumers.
And organisations like the State Bank of India, Standard Chartered bank and Citibank have already finalised their deal.
“We don't approach anyone. If someone gives work we do. We have a wide reach. We can work in any area,” says President, Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association, Sopan Laxman Mare.
The dabbawalas are well known across the country for their efficiency and have also rendered their services to a few companies also used them for promotional purposes. However, they were paid a measly sum.
“If someone works he must earn money. Extra work should mean extra money,” says a member of the association Anil Sinde.
Companies are aware that dabbawalas have an easy access to various offices because of their distribution network and this is what they want to utilise.
The savvy tiffin-carriers, on their part, don’t mind doing the new work as long as there’s extra money coming in.
