Mumbai's ferry boat owners going green

Mumbai: Usman Panchi has been ferrying tourists to the Elaphanta Caves for the last 30 years.

Each of the 120 horsepower engines that he used earlier on his three boats guzzled a whopping 30 litre of diesel per trip blows most of his hard earned money up in smoke.

But that will not be the case anymore because Usman has shifted to a new five-per cent blend of bio-diesel and it is certainly reflecting on his bottom line.

"I save Rs 350 per trip as and use 10 litre less of diesel,” says Usman, who is also secretary of Ferry Owner’s Association.

Usman is one of 40 such ferry owners who were convinced by awareness programmes like the one conducted by The Energy & Resources Institute or TERI

And after the Green Boats project came into practice, the emissions have drastically reduced.

Compared to the normal diesel boats the fumes from bio diesel boats have:

  • 30 to 50 per cent less carbon monoxide.
  • 33 to 85 per cent less carbon dioxide.
  • Up to 85 per cent less sulphur dioxide.

And that is not all and that's not all even the boats are running better now.

But what about the cost?

Bio diesel is 60 paise cheaper than normal diesel. And it is a project TERI that makes the green fuel more popular.

"If we can make one sector self sufficient then where we can effectively use bio diesel and also check for the emission levels then I think that we can certainly go with these readings and we can set a benchmark,” says TERI, fellow, Dr Anjali Parasnis
