Mumbai's horror: Two rape cases reported

Mumbai: Two rape cases have been reported in Mumbai. Of the victims is an aspiring actress and the other, a child of nine years who was reportedly raped after she was dragged from school.

A lesser known music video director, R K Kumawat has been accused of raping a 25-year-old aspiring actress on July 22. Police say he lured her with promises of featuring her in a music video.

"Under the pretext of making an item song he had called the girl and then the incident occurred," said Assistant Commissioner of Police, Versova, Dilip Suryavanshi.

Kumawat has been remanded to police custody till July 29. Sources say he admitted to the crime during interrogation.

While Kumawat's arrest points towards the menace of casting couch, in another shocking case from another suburb if of a nine-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by a 21-year-old boy who dragged her from her school to his home where he raped her.

"He scared her and took her home where he raped her," said the victim's mother.

"He told me not to tell anyone or he'll kill me," said the victim.

The girl was allegedly raped after school on July 18, but police registered an FIR only on the July 24. The accused has now been arrested and remanded to police custody till August 1. But without a strong deterrent punishment for rape, this might just be another statistic in a long list.
