Mumbai: Who says our youth is indifferent? A group of five youngsters living in the slums of Mumbai have proven otherwise. They have filmed a video magazine that aims to push a Mumbaikar to the polling booth on February 1.

Yashodhara Salve, an arts student, has never seen or held a camera let alone face one. But her keen interest in social issues made her part of the team trained by documentary filmmaker, Ajay Raina under the initiative of the NGO Akshara.

“We think that only if one votes then they have the right to demand and get work done from their corporator,” says Yashodhara

Bad roads, choked nallahs, garbage – they are images that every Mumbaikar can associate with peppered with Marathi music and people's voices.

Their first tryst with the camera sees just the right mix of local flavour adding a professional touch.

So was it easy facing the camera?

“Initially I used to check how I look on camera, was a little scary. But now its ok,” Yashodhara says.

From shoots, learning editing skills, to finally screening their video across bastis of Mumbai, they took an active part at every stage of filming, even taking audience reactions in the right spirit.

“Sometimes the crowd even throws stones at the screening,” says a rickshaw puller, Amol Laljare

With APNA TV these young filmmakers aim to initiate a thought process among Mumbaikars. And the screening seems to have done just that.

This enthusiastic lot will continue the screenings till the BMC polls, after which they plan to keep making more such informative videos.
