New Delhi: As Munnabhai, Sanjay Dutt may have won hearts and played cupid but he has failed to bring warmth to the fast deteriorating Samajwadi Party-Congress relationship.
When Amar Singh announced Sanjay Dutt as his party's candidate from Lucknow, the Congress was taken aback. After all it was still engaged in seat-sharing talks and no formal unilateral announcement was expected.
“It would have been nice if it was a joint announcement,” said Congress leader Salman Khursheed.
It’s the seat-sharing talks which seems to be unseating the new friendship. First Sanjay Dutt, whose family has been traditionally a Congress supporter - his sister Priya Dutt stepped into her father's Sunil Dutt’s shoes after his death.
Ironically, when Sanjay was caught in jail, it was his legacy which prompted Amar Singh to support him.
Also, Rampur, which the Congress was keen on, has gone to actress and SP leader Jaya Prada
Legal experts say that with only a Supreme Court stay on his punishment and not conviction, Dutt may not be able to contest till he gets a clearance from the SC. This is giving rise to a suspicion within the Congress that Munnabhai is being used by the SP to prove a point.
While Sanjay Dutt may be the latest irritant, differences between the SP and Congress have been growing over:
- An inquiry into the Batla house encounter. SP wanted it but Congress rejected it.
