Mumbai: NCP MP Padmasinh Patil who's been arrested by the CBI for allegedly killing his cousin and Congress leader Pawan Raje Nimbalkar, has been remanded to CBI custody till June 14, 2009.
He was produced in the Panvel court on Sunday morning.
Earlier, reports of his arrest had triggered protests by his party workers.
Angry cadres of the NCP attacked a CNN-IBN broadcast van in Osmanabad.
While the glass panes of the van were smashed, the CNN IBN crew escaped unhurt.
Patil is the sitting MP from Osmanabad. He was arrested by the CBI on Saturday night in connection with the murder of Congress leader Pawan Raje Nimbalkar in 2006. Soon, he had complained of hypertension and related complaints due to which he was admitted to the hospital. After discharge on Sunday morning, he was brought to the Panvel Court.
Patil is alleged to have paid 30 lakh rupees as hit money to get Nimbalkar killed.
Nimbalkar was killed in Navi Mumbai in June 2006 when two gunmen opened fire at him on the Mumbai-Pune Express Highway at Kalamboli.
Padmasinh Patil is the fifth person to be arrested in the case. Others arrested include alleged hitman Parasmal Jain and gunman Dineshram Tiwari and Patil's associates Satish Mandade and Mohan Shukla.
Padmasinh Patil allegedly paid Rs 30 lakh rupees as payment of the contract to kill Nimbalkar. The payment was made to alleged contract killer Parasmal Jain to kill Nimbalkar.
The money had been delivered through Patil’s man Shukla.
Patil had been called in for questioning late on Saturday night. A few hours before he was arrested, he spoke to CNN-IBN’s sister channel IBN Lokmat.
Patil had refuted the charges made by the CBI.
“This is rubbish! He was my cousin. Why would I kill him,” he asked instead.
Other NCP leaders have closed ranks behind their colleague.
NCP strongman and R R Patil said, “The CBI investigation is still on. I will speak after all investigations are over.”
