New Delhi: Is Jessica Lall murder accused Manu Sharma misusing his parole?

Manu Sharma was given parole in September for a month ostensibly to take care of his ailing mother. The parole was later extended by another month, reportedly on the recommendation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

However on Friday, his mother Shakti Rani Sharma was seen giving a press conference in Chandigarh. The press meet was held at the Sharma family-owned Piccadilly Hotel.

Manu Sharma's parole ends on November 22. He is serving life sentence at Tihar Jail in Delhi after being convicted of shooting model Jessica Lall in 1999.

Manu Sharma is the son of the former Union minister and Congress leader, Venod Sharma.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit defended Manu Sharma's parole saying he was entitled to it. "Everything was done according to the rules and he is entitled to parole," she told CNN-IBN.

Meanwhile, Jessica Lall's sister, Sabrina Lall said, "The boy's father is a politician and is well-connected. That has been the problem from Day 1. You are granting him parole and an extension without even checking if circumstances for it are valid. His mother has also been busy flagging off some cricket team and doesn't look unwell at all, forget critical."

THE BIG QUESTIONS

  • Did the Chief Ministers of Delhi and Haryana seek parole for Manu Sharma?

  • What was the exact reason for granting him parole?

  • If his mother was unwell, how was she addressing a press conference in Chandigarh?

  • Was Manu Sharma partying in Delhi while on parole?

PAROLE EXPLAINER

A convict after spending six years in jail can request jail authorities for parole on any grounds that he feels necessary. The request is then sent to the legal department of lieutenant governor. The lieutenant governor then recommends the same to the jail authorities

Parole is usally granted for one or two months. It can be for a longer period in special cases. If the lieutenant governor turns down the prisoner's request, the prisoner can then file a writ in High Court.
