Murdered UK Indian's husband held, gets bail

London: It has been three days since 28-year-old Geeta Aulakh was found murdered with her arm chopped off. The police had arrested six men for the murder - including her husband Harpreet Aulakh. Harpreet, however, was released on bail until mid-January next year.

Harpreet may be out on bail, but he isn't free of all the media attention. Tabloids have now focused on his profile. One report quotes him as saying he loved his wife and would not hurt her, while another report describes him as a bullying, jobless husband who once photographed himself with a gun.

The tabloids are also speculating on theories from honour killing to a bitter divorce. Friends and family suggest that Geeta had a strained relationship with her husband. However, the police have dispelled theories about this being an honour crime and are appealing to eyewitnesses to come forward.

Local labour MP for Southall - where Geeta lived - Virendra Sharma, says the community is still in disbelief.

"It's tragic. People are concerned. There are theories. I would urge the media to be responsible," he said.

An inquest is now open in this case. Geeta's two children are being taken care of by the social services.
