Mush edits out boast against CIA

Islamabad: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has made an amendment in the Urdu edition of his recently released memoir In the Line of Fire, by deleting the lines that referred to "CIA prize money given to the Pakistan government" for catching al Qaeda operatives.

The Urdu edition of the book titled Sub Sey Pehlay Pakistan was launched in Islamabad on Saturday.

In the English edition, Musharraf had pointed out the fact that Pakistan had captured 689 al-Qaeda operatives and handed over 369 of them to the US. "We have earned bounties totalling millions of dollars. Those who habitually accuse us of ‘not doing enough’ in the war on terror should simply ask the CIA how much prize money it has paid to the government of Pakistan," said the book.

But, in the Urdu edition, the reference to having "earned bounties totalling millions of dollars" and prize money has been dropped, reported the Pakistan dailyThe Dawn.

Within two days of his book launch in New York, Musharraf had admitted of making ‘mistake’, and had indicated that an amendment was in order.

"That is my error. It doesn’t come to government of Pakistan. I should not have written that and I’m going to amend it in the future copy certainly," he had told journalists in New York on Sept 27.

The amendment has been made in the opening paragraph of Chapter 23 titled "Taaqub" (meaning Manhunt) that highlights Pakistan’s role in capturing al Qaeda suspects after 9/11 attacks on the US.

Published by Ferozsons The Urdu version of Musharraf’s memoir is is a hard-bound edition containing 411 pages and priced at Rs 495.

Initially 20,000 copies have been published.

It is learnt that Sehba Musharraf and Musharraf’s former deputy military secretary Brigadier Asim Saleem Bajwa, who now commands the 111 Brigade, played an active role in the publication of the Urdu edition.
