Music review: Aa Dekhen Zara

The peppy, dance number from Sanjay Dutt's debut Rocky lends its name to Neil Ntin Mukesh's second film – Aa Dekhen Zara.

Neil's first outing as an actor (Johnny Gaddaar) had an edgy score by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. This time around it's Pritam and newcomer Gourav Dasgupta who share the credits as music directors.

The opening track Gazab is a breezy listen. A hip-club number with corny lyrics like Gazab Haiyo Rama Zulum Haiyo Rama, the fusion surprisingly works well. It gets even better in the club mix. Sunidhi and Shaan were clearly having a blast in this one and that energy comes across all through this track.

But after a spirited beginning ADZ starts going downhill, till a classic salvages the album from disaster.

By now, Sunidhi Chauhan can sing numbers like Rock The Party even in her sleep. Another Pritam's similar sounding stock tunes, the song doesn't even have a catchy hook to keep you tuned in. Then there is the theme song Power which tries too hard to do a Mission Impossible. Forget MI, it ends up sounding like a Race clone.

Mohabbat Apse has a seductive feel to it. Sung skillfully by Aakriti Kakkar, a lot rests on Bipasha Basu - who can take this number to another level. In fact that is true for most of the tracks in the album. If picturised well, a super hot Bipasha Basu, can make the most average sounding songs look great.

And now we come to what is being marketed as the track of the album. The fixation with Aa Dekhen Zara doesn't end at the title. There is actually a remix of the RD Burman original – not one, but in two versions.

The lounge version is an interesting experiment. Gourav gives the fast paced number a different spin altogether. Easily the best number of the lot, one hopes it is used well in the film. If alive, even Panchamda would have been proud at hearing the new version of his song.

While the idea of getting Neil Nitin Mukesh is a unique marketing gimmick, does he deliver as a singer? Yes. A big thumbs up to the legendary Mukesh's grandson's singing debut. But one wishes the Kishore Kumar original was also merged into the track, ala Bachna Ae Haseeno.

Verdict: Download the new Aa Dekhen Zara on your phone and give the other tracks a miss.
