Deoband says yoga not un-Islamic, healthy

New Delhi: The verdict is out. Yoga is finally not un-Islamic, at least according to the verdict by Darul Uloom Deoband, India's best known Islamic seminary.

The Darul Uloom denounced the ban on yoga that had been called for eroding the Muslim faith by Indonesia's top Islamic body, MUI.

Darul reiterated that there is nothing un-Islamic or wrong with any exercise done for health reasons.

"Why is faith being given the connotation of religion? The broad purpose of it is to create health. Islam has emphasised a lot on being healthy," argued Akeel Siddiqui, the spokesman for Darul Uloom, Deoband.

The Uloom insisted that Islam does not prohibit anyone from practicing yoga or any other kind of physical exercise.

Interestingly the Islamic body and Baba Ramdev, one of the foremost teachers & practitioners of yoga are on the same page on this issue.

Ramdev says that the Hindu chant 'Om' can just as easily be replaced with Muslims chanting Allah, if they think it can help.
