Srinagar: In Kashmir, Muslim leaders are not happy with the knighthood awarded to author Salman Rushdie and are calling for a boycott of all his books, among other things.
"I have issued fatwa for his execution. Kashmiri booksellers should remove all the author's books from their shops and I appeal to all Muslims to burn his books" said Grand Mufti of J&K, Mufti Bashirudin.
Muslim leaders across the world had targeted Rushdie over his book, Satanic Verses, which they found to be disrespectful to the Prophet.
In Kashmir, where Rushdie’s grandparents once lived, a death edict was issued in 1988 which holds even now.
Though many Kashmiris haven't heard about Rushdie's knighthood, bookstores started withdrawing his books, once news about the new fatwa spread.
“If Muslim clerics have issued fatwa against the books, we are surely going to remove them. Moreover, people too expressed concern on learning in newspapers about the controversial issue,†said a bookstore owner Hilal Ahmad Khan.
Though Kashmir has remained mute to the Knighthood of the authour, the extremists element have been gunning down Rushdie with a strike slated on Friday and the coming days are likely to see tension.
