New Delhi: A section of Muslims and the Nigerian American community in the US are worried that the involvement of a Nigerian Muslim in an attempted bombing aboard a North West Airline flight could fuel racial profiling.
The concern is that airport security officials may treat anyone who's an African and speaking Arabic as a potential terrorist.
The suspect in the Christmas Day incident in Detroit, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, had told investigators he was trained by the al-Qaeda in Yemen with 20 other men.
The Nigerian Foreign Minister criticised Washington's introduction of tighter screening for passengers from Nigeria.
Meanwhile, a UK MP - who is a Muslim - has kicked up a different kind of storm altogether by saying racial profiling is needed.
Khalid Mahmood said, "I think most people would rather be profiled than blown up. It wouldn't be victimisation of an entire community. I think people will understand that it's only through something like profiling that there will be some kind of safety."
