Muslims rebuild temples in J&K

Kashmir: The devout are once again thronging the Tripursundri temple in south Kashmir and the crowds are back after a gap of 16 years.

The temple was shut down in 1990 during the height of terrorism, but now the temple bells are ringing again and all due to the efforts of local Muslims who are helping their Hindu friends renovate and re-open several of the historic shrines in the Valley.

Says a resident of the Valley, Neta Kamal, "I have come from Uri to visit the temple. Things are gradually coming to normal. Hindu-Muslim unity is also improving."

Over the past four years, more than 30 shrines have been re-opened with local support and the All Parties Migrants' Coordination Committee (APMCC) are also helping open temples that were damaged by terrorists.

Says President APMCC, Vinod Pandit, "We were overwhelmed by the support of majority community. They have shown that Kashmiryat is alive and people will never allow fundamentalists to take guard. People have defeated those forces and it is a great victory for secularists."

Years of estrangement between Hindus and Muslims has not been able to shake Kashmir's composite culture along with the aazan, temple bells have started to ring again in Kashmir.
