Muthoot scion murder road rage case: Cops

Thiruvananthapuram: The murder of Paul Geroge Muthoot, son of prominent industrialist Muthoot George is now being seen as a case of road rage.

Kerala Police now say that Paul might have been caught in the gang rivalry between two goonda gangs in Alapuzha district of Kerala - a case of 'wrong man, wrong time, wrong place'.

Paul's vehicle is reported to have hit the bike of one of the gang members which sparked of heated arguments between the gang members and Paul resulting in a chase and one of them stabbing him.

IG Ernakulam Range, Vinson M Paul says, "Paul Muthoot's car hit a motorist but Paul did not stop his car. The occupants of a tempo traveller decided to chase Paul's car after the sped away. Two kilometers into the chase, they saw Paul's car parked on the roadside and an altercation happened in which Paul was assaulted. One of the occupants of the tempo traveller stabbed Paul to death."

But matters aren't that simple. There are still a number of loopholes that remain to be neatly tied up.

  • Why were two notorius gang leaders travelling with Paul the day he was killed?
  • What were his dealings with them and where did they vanish when Paul was stabbed?

This also highlights the growing menace of mafia-politician-businessman nexus.

The onus perhaps is now on the state government to curb the goondas.

Though a Goonda Act was passed in the state in 2006, the law has perhaps remained more in the paper than on ground.

Police say that Paul was perhaps in the wrong place at the wrong time, but his murder throws up some crucial questions - what was an upcoming young businessman doing in the company of hardcore goondas? Will the state government finally show some spine to break this nexus that's fast spreading across the state?
