Mysore slowly losing its serenity to IT cultu

Mysore: Three hours from Bangalore is Karnataka’s next IT destination that has seen tremendous change in the recent past.

Gulmohur-lined lanes, the heritage of the rajas, serene old bungalows, free roads, there is an undeniable quaintness about Mysore.

The city became a pensioner's paradise after Bangalore began losing that tag, but now the apartment culture is catching on.

Steel-and-glass buildings dot the skyline and roads are getting crowded.

Former union minister and a Mysore resident M S Gurupadswamy, one of India’s first MPs says he hasn’t seen the town change so suddenly as it has done in the last five years.

“The atmosphere of Mysore should not be spoilt. It is already spoilt, it should not be spoilt further.. It should not become like Bangalore. That's my wish,” says Gurupadswamy.

And that's what KB Ganapathy is campaigning for. His newspaper paper Star of Mysore, is leading the crusade against any threat to the city's heritage, be it lesser tree cover or a real estate lobby funded by politicians or unscientific planning.

“In spite of improvement of city roads we see traffic congestion. Planners must have vision if they don't, Mysore will become another Bangalore,” says Ganapathy.

And it is a prospect every Mysorean wants to avoid.

“The government should start planning for Mysore traffic because it may become too late,” says a resident.

It is this old-world feel that Bangalore lost to the IT boom that Mysore holds on to passionately.

And as the city of palaces stands on the brink of change old-timers hope to see better civic planning at least here so that their hometown doesn't head towards the same chaos that Bangalore is today.
