Bangalore/Mysore: University of Mysore, situated on a beautiful campus called Manasa Gangotri, is reputed for being one of the best in the country. But it's now in headlines in Karnataka for all the wrong reasons.
Professor Shiva-basa-vaiah of the Department of Zoology, accused of sexually harassing a research scholar, has been arrested by the police. She had complained about being asked for sexual favours time and again by the Professor.
Unhappy with the university authorities, she finally attempted suicide last week and is recovering in hospital now.
It was only after her desperate suicide attempt and many protests by students that forced the university to take action.
"We're enquiring into this. We have suspended the professor," said University of Mysore Vice Chancellor Dr V G Talawar.
But now Talawar himself is under the scanner for allegedly siding with the accused professor. The Vice Chancellor has now been booked for abetment in the crime.
This is not the first time that such shocking instances have come to light. Over the last few years, 14 of 25 complaints of sexual abuse have been proved true by the varsity's special cell. But in all cases, the abusers have gone scot-free.
