Mystery of Bachchans' imported cars

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: When actor Abhishek Bachchan turned 31 on February 5 it was reported that he was gifted a spanking new Bentley.

By only four days later, Amar Singh took it back and drove in the point that he was its rightful owner.

“This is not a gift to Abhishek or Amitabh (Bachchan). It is a car bought for my use during my Mumbai trips and I have paid the tax on it,” said Amar Singh.

Meanwhile, Amitabh got a car as well and nothing less than a Rolls Royce Phantom worth Rs 3.5 crore - a gift from Eklavya director Vidhu Vinod Chopra to his lead actor. “He promised to buy me a car, he hasn't so this is a polite reminder,” said Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

“This is just guru dakshana,” said Amitabh.

But the Rolls Royce, too, was carted by back to the showroom after a couple of days. It seems it was there just for a photo op and the real thing will wheel in sometime later.

Chopra had reportedly signed Bachchan on for his production, Eklavya for a token fee of Re 1 only.

Clearly, Bachchan the actor comes much cheaper to Chopra, than Bachchan, the friend who settled for a Rolls Royce.

Looking at the bigger picture, had Bachchan charged a fee of Rs 3.5 crore for acting in a film, he would have been liable to pay 33.66 per cent tax on it—which would amount to almost 1.2 crores.

But in this case, even a Rolls Royce worth Rs 3.5 crore attracts no tax penalty since it has been given as a gift by Chopra.

Giving and taking aside, the Bachchans can't complain with two absolutely free imported cars.
