Mystery of Haryana's missing women voters deepens

Chandigarh: There is a mystery in Haryana every time the state goes to polls: the number of women voters just keeps dipping.

The number of women voters in the state is 54.74 lakh this election, but in the voters list for the 2004 Lok Sabha elections the number was 56.6 lakh. The least number of women voters was recorded in Faridabad Lok Sabha constituency and the most in Sirsa.

The decline is shocking, as the population of Haryana has increased. The Election Commission has now ordered a door-to-door survey to figure the reason for the declining number of women voters.

“There are several pockets in the state where the number of women voters has declined. We have asked the district collectors to find out the reasons behind the decline,” says M L Kaushik, the State Election Officer.

Haryana’s gender ratio is one of the lowest in the country. For every 1000 males, the state has 760 females. In rural communities, many people believe women should vote after marriage—reason perhaps for the low number of female voters.
