President's rule imposed in Nagaland

New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil on Thursday approved the recommendation of the Union Cabinet to bring Nagaland under President's Rule. Following the imposition of President's Rule, the Assembly has been kept under suspended animation.

The Union Cabinet had taken the decision to bring Nagaland under President's Rule on January 1 and recommended the same to the President on Wednesday.

The decision was taken after the BJP-backed Democratic Alliance won a controversial no-confidence motion in the state Assembly last month.

However, Chief Minister Neiphu Rio was not happy with President's Rule.

"Imposition of President's Rule is outrageous and it is a murder of democracy," Rio told CNN-IBN.

Rio survived the Vote of No Confidence in the 60-member Assembly 23-19 on December 13 after Speaker barred three independents from taking part in voting.

In another controversial rule votes of nine dissident ruling NPF members were declared as invalid.

The decision by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Cabinet to bring Nagaland under President's Rule comes just a few weeks before the state goes to elect a new Assembly in February.
