New Delhi: Nagesh Surve is a trained sitarist, violinist and a music composer. But he never imagined that his whistling talent would bring him all the fame and money.

In the Aamir-Kajol starrer Fanna in the song chanda chamke cham cham it was not Kajol but 58-year-old Nagesh who has been whistling.

He has been doing it for Hindi films for more than three decades now. And it all started out as a hobby, often used to fool friends.

"I started by copying the way my friends used to whistle. So, they would always think that someone else is whistling and could never find me. It was good fun," Surve says.

And like in movies, it was a matter of chance that Surve started to whistle for films, professionally. He got his big break with Julie and followed it up with films like Karz and Hero.

He has whislted for more than 1400 films from Tezaab to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai; from Dhoom to Lage Raho Munnabhai. But Surve says industry still doesn't take a whistling artiste seriously enough.

"Whistling is like singing. We also need rehearsals like singers. But nobody takes it seriously," Surve adds.

And now Nagesh has a whistling partner, his daughter Rupali, who learnt the tricks of trade by observing her father.

The duo has whistled together in films like Ghunghat, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Dhoom 2.

But Nagesh is unhappy about the changing music scenario. While the revenue streams have increased in the form of ringtones and caller tunes, the artistes still don't get the commensurate benefits.

"Songs are used for various purpose these days but we got money only for the film. We should also get some share of the revenue that the music company makes," Surve says.

And so, he is ready with something new. Now Sruve is trying to whistle the hit song from Guide, piya tose naina lagi re.

He will soon be releasing an album in which he has whistled the songs from various films.

Next up, his whistle can be heard in films like Munnabhai Chale Amerika and Dhoom 3.
