Nandigram leaves many orphaned

Nandigram: Two days after police firing claimed 14 lives in Nandigram, the stories of those affected are beginning to pour in.

Among those killed during the protest rally was Rathikanto Das, a tea shop owner in Nandigram. His children — Ruma Rai and her brother — have no idea of their father's whereabouts.

Das had left home to take part in a protest rally against the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on Wednesday, but never returned.

When nine-year-old Ruma was asked if she knew where her father was, she says, "He went to participate in the rally. We haven't seen him since."

According to Ruma, some villagers are claiming that Das was killed in the police action. "People are saying my father was killed. He was beaten to death," she says.

Ruma's mother has also been missing since that fateful day. But Ruma and her brother are not giving up hope and continue to wait in the hope that their parents would return soon.
