Left Front asks CM not to deploy CRPF

Kolkata: West Bengal Home Secretary , Prasad Ranjan Ray made a shocking confession on Wednesday.

“Now it seems that all that we had done over the last three-four months appears to have gone down the drain. We have to think of things again,” said Ray

Protesting farmers in Nandigram seem to have brought the mighty Left Front government down to its knees. While violence rages on in Nandigram, the Left Front has decided not to let Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee go ahead with his plan to deploy the CRPF. They fear that rather than curbing the violence such a move would fan the flames.

“There will be no no CRPF now. We have asked the government to settle the matter through discussions,” said senior CPI-M leader, Jyoti Basu.

The fear is justified as things are getting worse. Regular clashes between CPM and the Trinamool-led Bhumi Uched Pratirodh Committee supporters have claimed a dozen lives in the past one week.

The battle is no longer about the Special Economic Zone, scrapped eight months back. Now the war is on to gain lost ground. Trinamool Congress claims CPM activists started the clashes in a bid to reestablish themselves in areas from which they had been ousted. Trinamool is also opposed to deployment of the CRPF.

“Article 355 needs to be implemented immediately. There is no law and order in Nandigram. CPI-M is attacking innocent people,” said Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee.

More than 2,000 families have fled Nandigram since the fresh violence started. While EFR troops have taken control over some troubled areas, many parts still remain outside police's reach.
