Chennai: Ever heard of a game of volleyball where the ball rolls under the net instead of over it? And the players hear the ball, rather than see it?
Well, Lakshmi and her teammates specialise in it. They are all visually impaired children, who have gathered in Chennai from all around the region to participate in the South India Volleyball Competition organised by Nethrodaya, a self-help group.
Lakshmi, a Class 10 student is thrilled and now she says she wants to become a Physical Training teacher.
"In our school, we always used to lose to the boys, and our teacher said we wouldn't be able to make it this far. Now after the win, we are really satisfied," says she.
For most of the players taking part in the game is a proud moment says the founder of Nethrodaya, Govindakrishnan.
Govindakrishnan, who substitutes for injured players in the matches adds that the tournament has been great so far, and not just in terms of the game, but also because visually challenged people get a chance to meet others like themselves and share experiences.
"This is not like a match between India and Pakistan. It is a play festival. Here everyone is sharing ideas and knowledge. We get to meet more people like ourselves. It's a treat," says Govindakrishnan.
Winning this match may not be the end, but for Lakhsmi and her teammates, it is certainly a fantastic beginning.
