New Delhi: In the first interview he has given after the recent killings in Nandigram over threatened land acquisition for Special Economic Zones (SEZs), Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath told CNN-IBN that the violence in Nandigram is not going to hurt the future of SEZs in India.
Kamal Nath was speaking exclusively to Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate.
Karan Thapar: After Wednesday's killings in Nandigram, does the government remain committed to SEZs? Or might you use this for political wriggling out?
Kamal Nath: There is no political wriggling out. It's an act of Parliament. Cabinet has considered it. But there's the question of land acquisition which must be fair, it must be equitable, it must be at the right price and it must be inclusive of the people.
Nandigram was a very unfortunate incident of land acquisition, but we must not confuse land acquisition with SEZs. You had the Tata car project, which was not an SEZ.
Karan Thapar: So do not confuse land acquisition and the problem of land acquisition with the viablitiy of SEZs?
Kamal Nath: Absolutely. They are two distinct things.
Watch Commerce Minister Kamal Nath take more questions on SEZs in CNN-IBN's Devil's Advocate on Sunday at 8:30 PM.
