Nandita Das on her directorial debut and much more

New Delhi: Nandita Das' two films, Before The Rains and Ramchand Pakistani were showcased recently at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Here is excerpt from the interview with Das on her directorial debut, Firaaq or In Such Times.

Anirudh Bhattacharyya: Your first film as a director, how nervous are you about that because you have ownership pf that project?

Nandita Das: Yes, nervous and excited and still working on it; still a month's work left. I'm in my post-production. I think it's been extremely satisfying and extremely stressful. I don't think I've focused on one thing for so long. I'm a restless person; I've always done different things and I've enjoyed doing that. But this has been what we call Arjun ki aankh. I've been completely single-mindedly at it and to pull myself away for four days for Tribeca, because two of my films are being shown here, that was quite a tough job. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a great unit, wonderful people in the cast and crew and I think that's why the experience was very precious.

Anirudh Bhattacharyya: And essentially what is In Such Times about?

Nandita Das: Firaaq, as it's called in Hindi, and In Such Times is the English title it's about how violence impacts human relationships. I think there has been sectarian violence all over the world and in India, for sure.

How things that happen in society, that happen outside our homes, does enter our homes. The fact that violence does not spare anybody so we can't wish it away. We can't think something is happening there, it's not going to come to me. It's basically how the relationships, the changing equations of relationships, that happen in such times and that's why the title - In Such Times.
