Ahmedabad: After clinching the Nano project, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is being called the most industry-friendly CM.
But is everything as good as it's being projected?
Or is Ahmedabad headed the Singur way?
Ravubha Vaghela, an industrialist of Sanand, owns a lot of land in the area. When collectorate officials called him to acquire his land for constructing approach roads for the Nano plant, Vaghela readily agreed to sell his land at rates lesser than the prevailing market rates.
Of the 53 acres private land acquired for approach roads, 30 acres were Vaghela's.
"Modi did this with great secrecy. Barring a few officers, not many knew of what was happening,” he says.
All it took was a few working hours for the collectorate to acquire land for construction of approach roads for the Nano plant.
But resentment is brewing from unexpected quarters - former owners of the Gujarat Agricultural University land at Sanand are a unhappy lot.
This 2250-acre land was acquired by the government in 1902 from 23 farmers for a sum of Rs 2 lakh.
But their descendants now say that the land was meant for cattle breeding and if it has to be sold, they should get compensation.
The farmers of Khoda and Bor Vata villagers insist they are not against the Nano plant but they have not been taken into confidence.
"Our problem is compensation. If the land is being sold at market rates, then these people should be given compensation,” says Khoda resident, Jeetsinh Vaghela.
But clearly, what swung the Nano project towards Gujarat is the speed at which the state government completed formalities for the deal.
This is why Ratan Tata chose Gujarat: "It was reflected to us in the speed at which everything was provided to us, particularly the land. What we saw in the past week or so, is truly unbelievable,” he said.
Discounting some voices of dissent, it appears the Nano project will hopefully have a smooth ride in Gujarat.
