New Delhi: Just four days before its formal launch, the worlds cheapest car – the Tata Nano must gear up for a big blow to its tag line.
Sources tell Network 18 that the cheapest model of the Tata Nano will cost about a lakh and thirty thousand, way beyond its 'under-a-lakh rupees' image.
The other big problem there are only about 800 Nano's ready for the millions eagerly waiting to book the car. Tata Motors is just not geared up to produce so many cars.
Consumers must wait at least a year to drive the Nano after booking it in the second week of April.
Tata Motors says the delay is due to production constraints.
The Singur setback lead to Tata Motors shifting temporarily to Pant Nagar in Uttrakhand but the plant was not totally geared to produce the Nano.
The plant which is being constructed for the Nano in Gujarat will only be ready by the end of 2009.
The only thing is cheer right now is that Tata Motors will pay consumers interest on the booking amount which is likely to be 50,000 rupees.
