Narayana Murthy for President?

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: As President A P J Abdul Kalam nears the end of his tenure, several names are doing the rounds for the seat of the First Citizen of India.

While Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and even superstar Amitabh Bachchan recently hit headlines as being in the running, Infosys chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy seems to be getting all the ‘Presidential’ attention.

Reports have it that Kalam himself wants Murthy to oversee national affairs from Rashtrapati Bhavan and has given his resounding approval after he met him in Mysore.

In fact, such is the public opinion in Karnataka that a group of software professionals in Bangalore even launched a website to garner support for Murthy's candidature.

While Narayana Murthy hasn’t denied the buzz, he has opined Raisina Hill could be Kalam's home for another five years.

"It is all hypothetical. But when the President is here – and he is such a wonderful man - it would be wonderful if he could continue for another term,” he said

Murthy has for long been taking a keen interest in administration, not so much in the governance at a national level, but at least in most matters concerning Karnataka and Bangalore, making him a potential candidate.

"If we don't improve infrastructure, if we oppose the starting of English medium schools, who will come? Why will anyone come?" he said.

While it looks as if Kalam would rather have a non-political person to carry on with his legacy, but will the politicians really take note?
