Narmada dam splitting families apart

Ahmedabad: Rehabilitation was the buzzword, on which Government locked horns with the activists of the ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan.’ But the problems do not end with mere rehabilitation. For the people living in the Sardar Sarovar Project affected areas, the rehabilitation process has not just uprooted them from their ancestral land but has also tore apart their family ties.

"Everyone's leaving this place. Brothers are fighting with each other. Girls already married off are coming back asking for a part of their share. There are lots of scuffles over money," says Gurucharan Patidar, resident of Nisarpur village located on the Narmada banks.

Forty-three-year-old Suren Kumar Jain, another resident says he has been rendered homeless. His only brother moved away after receiving the compensation money that he got in lieu of displacement. The joint family that was his greatest support has fallen apart with the displacement process.

"Families have been separated. We are three bothers. One is in Indore and the other one has left the city after taking his share of money. We were forced to abandon agriculture and now I’m left with no home or occupation," says Jain.

Government might have provided families with enough compensation, but the loss of institution is something that remains irreparable for the people of Sardar Sarovar Project affected areas.
