New Delhi: Fresh snowfall has virtually cut off the Kashmir Valley from the rest of the country. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed for vehicular traffic on Tuesday following heavy snowfall around Jawahar Tunnel.
Around 300 vehicles, mostly trucks and buses, have been stranded on the highway near the Qazigund area. The highway is referred to as the gateway to Kashmir since it is the only road that connects the Valley to the rest of the country
Srinagar also received the season's first snowfall on Wednesday morning.
The temperature has dipped to 1 to 2 degrees celsius due to the heavy snowfall. Flights to and from the Srinagar Airport have also been cancelled.
Most of the schools in the Valley have closed down a few days before the scheduled winter vacation, which was supposed to start on December 15.
In Himachal Pradesh, capital Shimla recorded 10.3 cm of snow while the tourist sites of Kufri and Narkanda witnessed 15 to 20 cm snowfall.
Snowfall and rain had its impact on electioneering in Himachal Pradesh. Congress President Sonia Gandhi's first campaign rally at Rehan in Kangra district was cancelled today due to inclement weather.
