New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Natwar Singh and his son Jagat Singh on Monday told the Justice R S Pathak Inquiry Authority that they had nothing to do with the oil-for-food scam in Iraq.
The Authority is probing the Volcker Committee report's allegations that the Singhs and the Congress were non-contractual beneficiaries in the scam. Natwar resigned as the External Affairs Minister after the report was published.
In their reply to the authority’s second notice, Natwar and Jagat requested that the probe be sped up. Natwar said the Volcker report prepared in February 2004 didn’t contain his name and was added as an “after-thought” on the basis of a report published in Al-Meda newspaper in Iraq.
The name was added after he became the External Affairs Minister. Natwar denied writing a letter in connection with any oil deal in Iraq.
Jagat, an MLA in Rajasthan, too denied any connection with the scam. He said that he had given his bank account number, business details and income tax returns to the authority and could get other information submitted to the Enforcement Directorate.
He said the Authority should examine all the material before it and speed up the probe to come out with the truth at the earliest. He denied certain reports in the media about his prior invlovement in some criminal cases.
