Natwar revolts, could get the sack

New Delhi: A privilege motion was moved against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday.

The notice relates to leakage of the Justice R S Pathak Commission report before it was tabled in Parliament and has been sent to the House Secretariat just a day ahead of the expected tabling of the report in Parliament.

Pathak Commission was set up to go into the findings of the Volcker Committee report on the Iraq Oil-for-Food programme that alleged that Natwar Singh, his son Jagat Singh, the Congress party and several Indian companies as beneficiaries of the scandal.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General Yogendra Narain has received Natwar Singh’s notice, sources said.

Asked whether it will come up in Rajya Sabha on Monday, the sources said, "We will examine whether it is admissible under the rules".

Both Natwar Singh and Manmohan Singh are the members of the Upper House.

CNN-IBN was the first to report the findings of the Pathak committee, which was looking into allegations made against the Natwar Singh.

The committee indicted Natwar Singh of misusing his official position. No money trail however has been established.

Only two days ago Natwar had said that he and Congress party were inseparable.

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who is the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, will now have to decide whether to admit the motion, which is bound to get the support of Samajwadi Party, TDP and AIADMK with whom an upset Natwar Singh has been hobnobbing in recent days.

Congress' key ally CPI also justified Natwar's move.

CPI General Secretary AB Bardhan said that there has been a leak and it should be investigated. He added that the privilege motion will be moved on Monday in Rajya Sabha and they have also sought Natwar Singh's opinion on the issue.

Natwar had met Bardhan earlier on Sunday.

"I spoke to Rajdeep Sardesai. He is a fine man and he told me that he knew the contents of the report beforehand," Bardhan said.

The SP, TDP and AIADMK together have a total of strength of 33 members in 245-member Rajya Sabha. The support of a minimum of 25 members is necessary for an admission of a privilege motion.

Natwar has met Amar Singh, General Secretary of Samajwadi Party, which has extended an open invitation to him to join it, and even BJP leaders in the last two days.

Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet will meet on Monday at 0940 hrs IST to discuss the Action Taken Report (ATR) on Justice Pathak report. The ATR will look at the role of Andaleeb Sehgal and Aditya Khanna and also at Jagat's connection with Khanna and Sehgal.
