New Delhi: Stung by the fact that the Congress Party has been given a clean chit by the Pathak Committee, while he himself has been implicated, former external affairs minister Natwar Singh has finally spoken up.
His message - the party and I are in the same boat.
"Mr Pathak's report says that my son and I have derived no financial benefit and that is the crux of the matter. The only aspersion against me and my son is that we misused our position. At the time I was neither a minister nor an MP and my son was not an MLA. How does the question of my misusing power arise? How can therefore any aspersion be cast on me and the Congress be given a clean chit," he said.
But almost predictably, the Congress was seen distancing itself from Natwar Singh entirely.
Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "From day one there is no question of linking the Congress party in any manner directly or indirectly. Where is the question of any other verdict coming? So we are happy that our stance from day one has been vindicated."
However, the BJP wants to place the ball firmly in Congress' court.
BJP Spokesperson Prakash Jawdekar said, "You are indicting a leader who has gone in the capacity of a Congress leader, so how can the Congress be detached from the whole episode?"
CNN-IBN learnt that Congress President Sonia Gandhi has already held a round of consultations with senior party leaders on the issue. More meetings are slated, and the next step is the preparation of the Action Taken Report, by the Government.
In the meantime, Natwar Singh and his son have been accusing the Finance ministry of targeting them and the blame game is likely to continue.
