New Delhi: The Indian Navy has released still pictures of the pirate ship it sunk on November 18 in the Gulf of Aden.

The Navy says the ship was heavily laden with explosives and ammunition and the photos show the pirate ship exploding after it was fired at by INS Tabar.

INS Tabar was sent on an anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden and fired at the 'mother vessel of the pirates' which had been mentioned in various piracy bulletins.

It is from such big ships that speed boats full of armed pirates were launched to mount pack attacks on merchant ships.

Pirates were seen roaming on the deck of the ship with automatic guns and rocket propelled grenade launchers. The pirates fired on the INS Tabar when it closed in for investigation.

INS Tabar's action against the pirate ship was the first time since 1971 that the Indian Navy had struck an enemy vessel.

India has also increased its naval firepower in Somali seas after Somalia gave it the green signal to enter its territorial waters in hot pursuit of pirates.

A 6,900 tonne-Delhi class destroyer has already joined INS Tabar.

The Delhi class destroyers are the largest indigenously built warships till date and pack more fire power in them than frigates.
