London: Pakistan will elect its new president on October 6 and the exiled politicians are scrambling home to keep pace with developments.
“The Chief Election Commissioner will receive the nomination paper on September 27, and the scrutiny will be conducted on September 29. The election will be held on October 6,” said Kanwar Dilshad Election Commission spokesman.
The elections will go ahead with the recently amended rules that the opposition claims are aimed to protect Gen Musharraf from disqualification. The Supreme Court is not amused with these amendments, although it refused to make the CEC a respondent.
A verdict on petitions challenging Gen Musharraf is expected towards the weekend.
Sensing the moment of reckoning for democracy in Pakistan is near, even exiled politicians are returning home—Benazir on October 18, Kulsoom Nawaz sometime after Eid and even Nawaz Sharif.
Nawaz Sharif’s brother, Shahbaz Sharif said, "I can assure you he will be back very soon. I can't give a specific date but he will be back in Pakistan very soon.
Nawaz Sharif has said he plans to return to Pakistan, when and how he'll do it nobody knows. With his wife and Benazir Bhutto also headed back, the plane to Pakistan is getting a little politically crowded. Who actually gets back and to what is a matter that has to be fleshed out further between Musharraf and the Supreme Court.
