New Delhi: Anti-Naxal operations in West Bengal on Thursday faced a setback as the security forces missed catching the most well known Maoist leader Kishenji even as they did get his lap top.
The operation was conducted jointly by the West Bengal Police and central paramilitary forces, which led to the recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition in a jungle in West Midnapore district.
"This time the operation was conducted on the information, which is provided by the arrested persons and Kishenji, the top CPI Maoist leader and his close associates were present there, though they managed to escape. But the operation itself and the kind of information now, which we are getting we hope that we will be able to arrest these persons very soon in near future," said West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Verma.
This is the second time the security forces failed to arrest Kishenji. The first time they missed him when Kishenji came in front of the media to release kidnapped police official Atindranath Dutta.
Police had encircled the Maoists leader but backed off when he threatened to kill Dutta.
"We have picked up three persons from the PO. One is Sitaram Hansda, Kanika Adak and Sefali Bera. We are interrogating them. So far they have told us that they were forcibly taken away by CPI Maoist cadres. So we are still verifying the backgrounds of these persons," said Verma.
Kishenji continues to control the Maoist movement in West Bengal and neighbouring Jharkhand and with Jharkhand's Shibu Soren-led government quietly halting anti-Naxal operations, it might be difficult to get hold of Kishenji any time soon.
