299 prisoners at large in Chhatisgarh

New Delhi: Just four days before the Prime Minister chairs a high-level meet on internal security, 299 of the 377 prisoners escaped from the Dantewada district jail in southern Chhattisgarh at 4.45 am on Sunday.

The prisoners broke out of the jail overpowering the jail guard, in what is being called a 'well-planned attack.'

Reports suggest that a Naxal commander instigated an internal rebellion at a time when the guards were least expecting it.

“The food was about to be served to the prisoners. All of a sudden they attacked the sentry who was positioned inside the jail and the sentry who was guarding the external area of the jail,” says Inspector General of Dantewada, R K Vij, “The prisoners escaped with the arms.”

Despite government's claims of fighting Naxalism, the Dantewada prison had only four policemen to guard 377 inmates. Even two hours after the jail break, no forces had arrived to hunt the escaped prisoners.

In a direct violation of state government orders, Dantewada is one of the several prisons in the state where hardcore Naxals have been lodged with other criminals.

Earlier, the Naxals had threatened to carry out a repeat of the Jehanabad jail break that took place two years ago.
