New Delhi: In a major strike, Naxals attacked a police outpost in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh killing 49 policemen and injuring 12 personnel.
Armed Naxals lobbed grenades and opened indiscriminate firing at the police outpost on Thursday morning.
Chief Minister Raman Singh told the state Assembly that 15 personnel of Chhattisgarh Armed Forces and 34 Special Police Officers posted at an outpost in Rani Bodli were killed in the pre-dawn attack.
He said 12 personnel, including six SPOs, were injured in the attack.
Singh said over 200 armed Naxals raided the outpost.
The Chief Minister also spoke to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and requested him to provide assistance in carrying out the evacuation operations.
Meanwhile, state Home Minister Ram Vichar Netam, leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma and DGP Om Prakash Rathore have rushed to the spot, Singh said.
A team of CRPF personnel has also rushed to the spot. Before fleeing with the weapons of the police officers, the Naxals heavily landmined the area and the barracks, officials said adding that the bomb disposal squad is clearing the land mines.
